Community
Outreach - "The Place"
Service, support, a cup of coffee and someone to
talk to
The Place responds holistically, traditionally and
spiritually to the needs of Aboriginal people living with HIV, AIDS and/or HCV.
The Place is a vibrant community where those at risk can find opportunities to
create, to belong to hope and to choose and have the freedom to believe in the
future.
The Place serves as a safe space for all people to
go that need somewhere to socialize, eat, get a clean set of clothes, hang out
and get help if needed, open 7 hours a day, Monday to Friday. It is a place
where people can belong regardless of their status and the many labels society
places on them. It is open to all people. Most people that come to the place are
dealing with addictions, poverty and homelessness. The outreach staff will help
in any way they can.
The morning begins with a cup of coffee and a
light breakfast from Monday to Friday. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays we
provide lunch at 1:00 pm. Through volunteers and staff most days we are able to
provide a hot bowl of soup and bannock.
Smudging is offered in the morning with access to
an Elder on request. Resources are available every day along with information on
community events. The resources cover a variety of topics from STI's to wellness
to traditional teachings. The clients come for fellowship, workshops, support
and counseling and sometimes they just want to talk to someone. This contact
with the clients allows staff to build a trusting rapport with them, that will
enable the client to come and seek treatment for the addictions or to go and get
tested. It is Aboriginal people helping Aboriginal people.
Different programming is offered throughout the
week that include AA meetings, men's groups, women's group, arts and crafts and
workshops and once a month, the Eagle Moon Healers come and provide individual
healing sessions for the clients.
